Starting September 30, 2025, the Social Security Administration (SSA) will officially stop issuing physical paper checks for benefit payments. This marks a significant shift in how beneficiaries receive their funds, aimed at improving efficiency and security.
What Are Your Options?
If you're currently receiving paper checks, you’ll need to switch to one of the following electronic payment methods:
Direct Deposit
Have your Social Security payments sent directly to your bank account. This is the fastest and most secure option.
Direct Express® Debit Card
A prepaid debit card specifically designed for federal benefit payments. No bank account is required, and funds are automatically loaded onto your card each month.
Deadline to Make the Switch
To avoid any disruption in receiving your benefits, you must update your payment method before September 30, 2025.
How to Update Your Payment Method
Visit the Social Security Administration website to set up direct deposit or enroll in the Direct Express program.
If you believe you qualify for an exemption from electronic payments, you can request one through the U.S. Department of the Treasury.
